Vogue World Fall 2022 Runway Show | Analysis from a fashion student

Fall 2022 NYFW. Ready to Wear

On September 12 of 2022, Vogue showcased its "runway show of the future." Vogue World.

Vogue reminded us that it IS the house of trend-casting as the show rep’d the current fad of the Tumblr-esqe era; low-quality flash photography, candid smiles, and a throwback to the romanticism of everyday life.

Speaking of everyday life, the runway show itself left the confined walls of studio space and brought the magazine alive in a meatpacking district in Manhattan on a single street. The main course for the evening was a live performance of supermodels, celebrity icons, SERENA WILLIAMS as the opener, and the coolest labels and must-have items for the Fall of 2022. Unlike forecasting a future season as is the theme of fashion week, Vogue World cast its line to the now, with every item in the show available to purchase right off the runway!

Here's my brief analysis of a few key themes covering the fashion and clothing featured.

CONTRAST

Hi Bella!

Serena Williams opened the show with this season’s striking color. Silver! Bella followed close behind in this dazzling dress that has hints of athluxury(luxury athleisure) that demands the attention of the entire runway. Flash photography illuminates the fabric against the background of the night sky, creating a brilliant contrast and feel to the runway. Even Bella’s makeup is subtle and hidden, truly increasing the polarizing differences between the silver of the dress and the blue of the sky as the true combination of the night.

REPETITION

Overlooking the art of repetition is a very boring game, which is why the runway was decked with a well-played orchestra of tie dies, florals, patchwork, prints, and multiple other techniques to squeeze these eye catching patterns onto the garments.

The art of repetition and patterns tied in the sense of modern day craft-core and neo bohemianism to this trendsetting show!

ALIGNMENT

How do you send multiple models down the runway, and ensure that each look receives an equal amount of support and individuality as if it’s the only piece in view? Alignment!

These three looks are SO well coordinated! The features of alignment are genuinely so subtle and so well done. To name a few, the height of the model in the middle draws parallel lines in the shape of an upward arrow from her asymmetrical skirt. We see alignment in the shape of a downwards arrow from the white in the left dress, to the middle girl’s slippers, to the untuck of the white button-up and sleeve caps on the right. Nothing is up to chance with this ensemble.

PROXIMITY

This dazzling dress demands the eye and keeps it swirling! The proxy between the front three flowers in contrast with the black flowers emboldening them keeps the eye hooked by taking the rule of thirds by bloom. Not only that, but the lack of white on the chest makes the black fabric on the model’s left shoulder pull the attention towards her physique, making the dress truly complementary to the wearer.

Notice the slide in of athluxury? Covid has altered everyday fashion to mix the livable and stylish. This family look is tied together through the proxy of these striped details featured around the ankles, on the infants dress, and snuck into the childs scarf as she overlooks the show from her fathers shoulders. This look was so well done, as it keeps the eye traveling from look to look in such a subtle fashion.

COLOR

I clipped these two looks side by side to truly show the power of these two monochrome looks. Both of these fashion-forward sportswear looks play on the power of boldness and brilliance, and one after the other walks down the runway clearly having something to say. The bright neon yellow-green plays across the color wheel with the brilliant neon blue.

The game of color is more subtle in comparison with these two pieces as we are not comparing one look to the other, but the elegant dance in between the looks themselves. On the left, we have a contrast of a cool red and baby blue. The contrast of two primary colors is a perfect match to the athletic top with the elegant dress slipped over.

On the look to the right, the bohemian jacket is thrown over a muted emerald green suit with staple chunky accessories. The undertones in the leather have a way of pulling the green that could easily be overlooked on the runway into a complete ensemble. Color has a way of showcasing, and tying everything together!

There you have it! Design and Color came alive in this show, making it a true spectacle for the lucky few who managed to snag a ticket, and to me from my computer screen. If anything, I couldn’t find any flaws. None. I looked for places in the show where a design principle could have been attributed but not a hair was missed. Vogue is Vogue today with reason. It was truly mesmerizing and a huge educational benefit to analyze such a gorgeous show. I now have a standard to aim for in all of my future work!
